Traveling for Sports Tournaments with Kids: My Best Tips for Staying Organized (and Sane!)
If your weekends look anything like mine, they’re filled with early mornings, folding chairs, snacks in every bag, and a whole lot of running from field to field. Traveling for sports tournaments with kids can feel like organized chaos—but with the right systems in place, it can actually be enjoyable (yes, really!).
Over time, I’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way. Here are my go-to tips for keeping everything organized so you can focus less on the stress and more on cheering from the sidelines.
🧳 1. Pack Like a Pro (and Pack Early!)
The biggest mistake? Waiting until the night before.
I like to start packing 2–3 days ahead of time and keep a running checklist for each child. Every sport has its own essentials, so having a master list saves you from forgetting something important.
My packing must-haves:
Uniforms (extras if possible!)
Cleats/turf shoes
Socks (always pack extra)
Water bottles
Snacks
Equipment (gloves, shin guards, bats, etc.)
Weather gear (hoodies, rain jackets, blankets)
💡 Mom tip: Pack outfits in labeled gallon bags by day—it makes mornings SO much easier.
🚗 2. Create a “Grab-and-Go” Sports Bag
Instead of repacking every weekend, keep a dedicated sports bag ready to go at all times.
This bag stays stocked with:
Sunscreen
Bug spray
First aid kit
Portable phone charger
Hair ties & extra accessories
Towels & wipes
When it’s always ready, you eliminate last-minute scrambling.
🗂️ 3. Keep Important Info in One Place
Tournament weekends often mean multiple locations, changing schedules, and team communication.
I keep everything organized in one spot, folder on my phone or print outs (even though my husband makes fun of me!):
Screenshots of schedules
Field maps
Hotel confirmations
Team group chats
Whether it’s a notes app or a printed folder, having quick access saves time and stress.
🏨 4. Simplify Hotel Living
Living out of a hotel with kids can get messy fast.
A few simple tricks:
Bring a laundry bag for dirty clothes
Get this back pack style bag for easy transportation from hotel room to hotel laundry space:
Use packing cubes to keep everyone’s items separated
I use packing cubes for travel as well as packing extra uniforms for games
Pack a small bin or tote for snacks and quick meals
This is perfect tote for organizing multiple types of snacks for travel and fits great in the Bogg Bag
Use a small storage container for laundry detergent, bounce and quarters.
I usually do a small load of laundry at night when the team is hanging out.
Sometimes both uniforms are needed the next day and I like them fresh but I always hang dry them:
Lay out the next day’s uniforms before bed
💡 Bonus: If there’s a mini fridge, stock it with easy breakfast items so you’re not rushing out the door hungry.
🍎 5. Snacks Are Everything
Tournament days are long—and expensive if you’re constantly buying food.
I always bring a cooler packed with:
Fruit
Sandwiches or wraps
Granola bars
Electrolyte drink
And even some sweet treats like their favorite candy or gummies
Not only does this save money, but it also keeps everyone fueled and in a better mood.
No time for coffee at the hotel? We usually run thru the drive thru for an iced coffee on those warm tournament days. I make sure to have my FrostBuddy in the car to help keep my drink cool! It fits all sizes perfectly! https://amzn.to/4mmoBxF
⏰ 6. Build in Buffer Time
Nothing adds stress like running late.
Plan to arrive early:
You’ll have time to find fields/gyms
Kids can warm up properly
You avoid that rushed, chaotic feeling
Plus, early arrival often means better parking and seating (huge win!).
🧼 7. Embrace the Mess (but Contain It!)
Let’s be honest—dirt, sweat, and gear everywhere is part of the deal.
My rule: contain it, don’t fight it:
Keep dirty gear in a separate bag or bin

Bring plastic bags for muddy cleats
If traveling from one field to the next in car, put disposable shower caps over cleats: https://amzn.to/4e8bC0u
Cleats soaked from rain and now they have to wear them again the next day? My friends told me about their portable shoe dryer so I got mine! Ok, why didn't I do this sooner?!?: https://amzn.to/3Oi66OB
Do a quick reset each night, if you are like me, do a load of laundry at the hotel so that you are not overwhelmed with laundry when you get home!
It keeps things manageable without stressing over perfection.
❤️ 8. Remember What It’s All About
In the middle of the chaos, it’s easy to get caught up in schedules, packing, and logistics.
But these weekends? They’re memories in the making.
The car rides, the team laughs, the sideline chats, the post-game celebrations—it all goes by faster than you think.
So yes, stay organized—but don’t forget to soak it all in.
Final Thought
Tournament travel with kids isn’t always easy—but with a little planning and a lot of flexibility, it can be one of the most rewarding parts of sports life.
You’ve got this, sports mom. 💪⚽🥎⚾
